Yogis Get Stressed Too...

Stress...Yes, yogis get stressed too...is of course unavoidable. I am fully aware that in comparison to others my life is pretty sweet (and for this reason I have a habit of a daily gratitude practice). But everyone’s stress and challenges are all relative and can’t be dismissed. Life is always going to be full of ups and down, and a life without some turmoil is not only impossible but is also undesirable.

Regular meditation has been a significant help in reducing my stress over the last few years. There is not a class I teach in Brisbane or on retreat in Bali where I don’t work in some sort of meditation/relaxation technique or exercise because I know how much it has helped me in recent times.

Many therapists and psychiatrists are taking up meditation as well, not only so that they can teach it more effectively to others but in order to deal with the very stressful demands of their own jobs, which can result in burnout.

A considerable amount of research has shown that meditation has benefits on mental health, including a reduction in proneness to depression, an increase in emotional positivity, and an increased ability to deal with life’s inevitable stresses.

I can vouch for this as there have been many times I have fallen off the meditation bangwagon this year, isn’t it ironic that the thing I know is most beneficial to me in those times of stress is the first thing to get dropped off my to do list.

So next time you hit a point in your life where things are getting a bit tough, if you haven’t dipped the toe in yet why not try meditation? There are so many great apps out there to guide you all you need is a quite space and 10 minutes out of your day.

What helps you guys to keep up this practice? Are there any apps you are using at the moment you love? We would love you to drop us a line and let us know how meditation has affected your stress levels this year…
